How to Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 on Android 4.1.2 XXDMD1 Jelly Bean Firmware

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5100 users in Southeast Asia countries can now download and install the latest official Jelly Bean firmware, Android 4.1.2 XXDMD1, through Samsung KIES as well as via Over-The-Air (OTA) update.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 users who have already updated their devices with Android 4.1.2 XXDMD1 Jelly Bean firmware, may root their devices using the tutorial below.

Below are two methods to root the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100:  One is using CF-Auto-Root file and the other one is using PhilZ Touch Recovery and SuperSU files which can be installed via Odin.

Pre-requisites
1. Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 on the computer.
2. Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone by navigating to Settings >> Developer Options.
3. Make a backup of all your important data before following the guide.
4. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 should be factory unlocked and not locked to any particular carrier.
5. Ensure the battery of the phone is charged more than 80 per cent.
6. The CF-Auto-Root, PhilZ Touch Recovery, and SuperSU files works only on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100. Applying these on any incorrect variant will brick the device. Verify the model number of the Galaxy Note 2 by navigating to Settings >> About Phone.

METHOD 1 - Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 by Installing CF-Auto-Root

File Required
1. CF-Auto-Root for Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100  (CF-Auto-Root-espresso10rf-espresso10rfxx-gtp5100.zip)
2. Odin 3.07

Steps to Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 by Installing CF-Auto-Root
Step 1: Extract downloaded CF-Auto-Root zip file and you will find a .tar.md5 file within it.
Step 2: Extract Odin zip file and you will get Odin3 v3.07.exe along with few other files.
Step 3: Power off your phone. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
Step 4: Boot the device into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down and Power buttons together. A warning screen will arrive, then press the Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.
Step 5: Run Odin on the computer as an Administrator.
Step 6: Connect the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait until Odin detects the device. When the device is connected successfully, the ID: COM box will turn yellow with the COM port number. Additionally, the successful connected will be indicated by a message saying Added. If Odin fails to detect the device then re-install USB driver.
Step 7: Select these files in Odin at respective buttons:
  • Click the PDA Button, and select CF-Auto-Root-espresso10rf-espresso10rfxx-gtp5100.tar.md5.
Step 8: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes. Also, ensure the Re-Partition checkbox is chosen only if a .pit file was chosen in the previous step.
Step 9 Verify everything suggested in Step 7 and Step 8 is done correctly. Then hit the START button to begin the flashing process.
Step 10: Once flashing completed, your tablet will restart and soon you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect your device from computer.

Your Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 running on Android 4.1.2 XXDMD1 Jelly Bean firmware is now rooted successfully. You may now install any app that requires root permission. Verify the root status of the device by downloading Root Checker app from Google Play Store.

METHOD 2 - Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 by Installing SuperSU via PhilZ Touch Recovery

File Required
1. PhilZ Touch Recovery for Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 (philz_touch_5.03.7-p5100.tar.md5)
2. UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip
3. Odin 3.07

Steps to Install PhilZ Touch Recovery on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100
Step 1: Extract Odin3_v3.07.rar file using winrar/7zip/winzip or any other extracting tool.
Step 2: Copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip file to external SD card of tablet.
Step 3: Switch off the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 . Then boot the device into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down and Power buttons together. A warning screen will arrive, then press Volume Up button to enter into Download Mode.
Step 4: Run Odin on your computer.
Step 5: Connect the tablet to the computer using the USB cable while the device is in the Download Mode. A message saying Added will arrive under Odin's message box in the bottom left. You will also get to see COM port with a number in Yellow when the tablet is connected to the computer successfully.
Step 6: In Odin, click the PDA and select the philz_touch_5.03.7-p5100.tar.md5 file. Also, ensure the Re-Partition option in Odin is not selected.
Step 7: Double-check and click Start in Odin. The installation process will now begin.
Step 8: Once installation is completed, the tablet will reboot automatically. After the home screen appears, unplug USB cable from the tablet to disconnect it from the computer.

Steps to Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 by Installing SuperSU via PhilZ Touch Recovery
Step 9: Reboot the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 into Recovery Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Up and Power buttons together.
Step 10: Now select install zip from sdcard, select choose zip from external sdcard and then navigate to the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip file. Select and confirm installation by selecting Yes.
Step 11: Once installation process is completed, return to main recovery menu and select reboot system now to reboot tablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 running on Android 4.1.2 XXDMD1 Jelly Bean firmware is now rooted successfully. You may now install any app that requires root permission. Verify the root status of the device by downloading Root Checker app from Google Play Store.

Note: Many Samsung devices store a flash counter that keeps track of how many times you have flashed custom firmwares to your device. Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter to zero.
